Hi:

This must be the craziest problem ever to happen to me in
12 years of computers. I hope someone can help…

I have a 386 running at 25Mhz. This is installed in a
MB with AMI BIOS ( a very old one, from 91, I think; all the
menus in the SETUP program are in B&W and the initial menu
just has EXIT/STANDARD CMOS/EXT. CMOS ). It also has the OPTI
chipset.

I have 8Mb memory ( the maximum that the MB will hold ) and
all the SIMMs ( 8 of them ) are 70ns.

My wife started having problems with Corel Draw and I gave
her my 486 motherboard ( nice guy that I am :-) and put the
386 MB in my computer. When running DOOM ( what else :-) the
computer locked up when loading the WAD file. I messed around
with the BIOS setup and got it to a point where instead of
locking up the DOS extender that DOOM uses would fail with a
page fault.

I also found out that the same lockups would occur when
running Fractal Painter under Windows.

Deciding that this was a memory problem I pulled out trusty
Checkit and checked memory.
Right enough, Checkit reported bad memory on section 7-8 meg.
Aha, I said, bad SIMM. NOT!: I substituted another SIMM from
the other computer and I got the same error. Aha!, bad SIMM
socket. BZZT, wrong again… I configured the PC to just use
4 Meg RAM and now the memory error reported by Checkit was
in the zone 3-4 Meg.

Can you believe this !?!? Anyone have the slightest idea of
what this might be ?

One other thing: by fiddling around with the BIOS setup,
sometimes Checkit would lockup or reboot the machine instead
of reporting errors.

What I’m thinking right now is that this must be some kind
of BIOS setup mistake ( though God know I’ve tried every
combination possible ) but its quite difficult to setup a
BIOS that old ( do you know what AT Stretch is ? )

Any hints/pointers/tips/info/help are welcome. I’m going
out of my mind.

My Doom was playing allright on my 486. Not quite, because
my SBPro would freeze about 30 seconds into the game.

Thats why I switched to my 386. Now when I run DOOM I get

Anyone know what this is ? iD ?

I’m running Doom on a 386/25 with AMI BIOS. I have a Soundblaster Pro
at 220,7,1.

By fiddling with the CMOS setup I’ve managed to: cause the computer to
reboot at the same point as above; cause the computer to lockup at same
point; cause computer to lockup during gameplay ( this was with clean boot,
no CONFIG.SYS and no AUTOEXEC ); cause Doom to stop with a message like
“Error: freed pointer with no ZONEID”.

What the hell is going on ?!?!??

Hi all:

I’m thinking of setting up an Internet access service in
Portugal, Europe. And that means full access ( ftp, telnet,etc ).

Although I’m quite at home with TCP/IP, routing, addresses, Ethernet,
X.25, etc I just dont know how to go about it.

Its obvious that I’m not going to lay Ethernet cable from my connection
point to my physical location. That means I need a leased line, that I
can get from the *only* ( can you say monopoly ? ) telecomm provider in
Portugal. But then what ? OK, get the IP address from someone ? Who ?
The problem is that in Europe the Net is “managed” ( can you say ruled ?)
by the local Unix Users Group who view themselves as the only providers
of net access, and dont want commercial sites. In Portugal, the PUUG doesnt
even provide TCP/IP, only UUCP for news and mail transfer. So what can I do ?
Can I go over PUUG and get another connection point in Europe ? Will I have
the same problem ?

Suppose that I can get that connection point ? The setting up of an IP address
over a leased line baffles me. Is ISDN a possibility ?

I’d like to hear from you. Any access providers in USA willing to do a joint
venture ?

Hi:

I installed Linux 99pl12 successfully and configured
X also ( though I spent 6 or 7 hours finding the correct
Xconfig setup.

I’ve setting up my system and during one compiling I got
a few error messages. My program is including errno.h and
this includes linux/errno.h; the problem is that this last
file doesnt exist, as well as a few others.

Does anybody know where these files are ? For sure, I didnt
install a few of the packages: one of them was lx99pl12 or
something like ( those are the kernel sources ). Are the files
there ? Its really a pain to use 2.5Mb just to get those files,
though….

Another matter: I know that Metrolink has Motif for Linux. Is
Motif available in source format for you to compile ? There was
a message from somenone on this group stating that he was trying
to do this. How did he get those sources ? FTP ? I thought that
Motif sources were not public domain….

Thanks for any help. For anyone interested, I contributed a
portuguese keymap ( pt.map ) posted on the admin group. Get it
there if you need it.

up on the screen…
