Need a New Paradigm

The weekly roundup of interesting links is based around
my feeling (that I’ve had for a couple of years) that I
need a new computing paradigm in my life. I’m fed up with
Windows, Linux and MacOSX; I’m fed up Python and web stuff;
I’m fed up with mouses, pointers, windows and whatnot…

If I ever get the chance (read: the time AND the money)
these are some of the options.

Hardware:

* TILE64. PROCESSOR FAMILY
http://www.tilera.com/products/processors.php

* Azul Compute Appliances
http://www.azulsystems.com/products/compute_appliance_specs.htm

I’m undecided between building my own system out of Tile64
64 core processors or buying the 768 CPU, 768 Gb machine from
Azul.

* BlueArc Storage Products
http://www.bluearc.com/html/products/titan.shtml

I think that here the 256Tb solidstate storage system
would be enough for my needs.

Software:

* Plan 9
http://plan9.bell-labs.com/sources/contrib/uriel/mirror/9book.pdf

* Oberon
http://www.oberon.ethz.ch/

I like the spartan interfaces; its all so basic but all so full
of possibilities

* Rebol Internet OS and programming language
http://www.rebol.com/

I love the one liners.

INTP

I am not one to put much value in personality tests. They
have their uses and their worth, but I dont think everyone
can be boiled down to 16 generic personality types (as is
proposed by the Myers-Briggs test).

On such tests I usually come out as an INTP; sometimes as
an INTJ; and other times as an ENTP.

Nonetheless I found two descriptions of the INTP type
that do resonate with me and describe quite acurately on
what has been described as my “bad temper” (“mau feitio”).

http://www.geocities.com/lifexplore/intp.htm
http://www.personalitypage.com/INTP.html

I particularly found interesting the characteristics
of “INTPs do not like to lead or control people” and
“can become intellectual dilettantes as a result of their
need to amass ideas”…

Still on the same subject I found a couple of other
pages that are particularly interesting if you do the
“Favored Careers” intersection:

http://www.similarminds.com/jung/intp.html
http://www.similarminds.com/jung/entp.html
http://www.similarminds.com/jung/intj.html

archeologist
assassin
astronomer
comic book artist
computer scientist
electrical engineer
figher pilot
forensic anthropologist
freelance writer
game designer
philosopher
philosophy professor
research scientist
researcher
scholar
systems analyst

There are some that I already did or do; the “game
designer” option has been on my mind many times; but
the “assassin” option had never crossed my mind! :-)
I wonder what the monthly pay is… LOL

Not only does she do great songs and lyrics, but
she’s also a redhead and “The Mother of MP3”. What
else can you ask for? Introspective, sultry and also
depressive, thats right; if only I wasnt married…

While doing aditional cleaning up of stuff around
the house (and managing to finally setup home WiFi
using my old Bronze and Silver Lucent PCMCIA cards),
I found 2 “historical” (for me) magazines: the first
issue of Wired (premiere issue, 1.1, 1993), with me
later becoming subscriber #352, and the Nov/Dec 1993
issue of Internet World.

There’s some hilarious stuff inside:

The ad that made me start up Esoterica (local ISP)
http://mv.asterisco.pt/Files/magpics/19082007(001).jpg

An article on what is the Internet (note the absence
of HTTP/Web; there wasnt any of that stuff)
http://mv.asterisco.pt/Files/magpics/19082007(002).jpg

An article on what is available on the Internet. Once
again note the userfriendly (not!) character based UI

http://mv.asterisco.pt/Files/magpics/19082007(004).jpg

An article on government information avalaible on the
Internet. Once again note the “advanced” gopher interface

http://mv.asterisco.pt/Files/magpics/19082007(007).jpg

Ad for the first online bookstore (no, not Amazon). Note
the absence of http:// address (there was no web yet) and
the Internet access info (telnet books.com). Ah the good
old days of interfaces for real men…

Hilarious Apple ad for the first Powerbook

Stallman was yet to be saved by Linux and the opensource
revolution
