twitter is just (as of now) a badly implmented form of IRC made, probably, by people who never used IRC.

either way i think that even SMS will be soon dead. i mean, it should be dead already. just like plain phonecalls, plain radio or plain tv.
it should be all data. SMS and phone calls (with/without video) should be replaced by XMPP, MMS and useless when there is email with attachements, radio by audio feeds, tv by video feeds, live and/or recorded, by demand and/or not-by-demand (classic tv style).

of course this was obvious 5 (maybe more) years ago. i'm seeing improvements but still there are some pieces missing for the puzzle to be complete.

with some work one can complete the puzzle at home but it's not yet "boxed" for the joe user.

hmm...do i hear "business model"?

>what about SMS?
>I think that Twitter has the potential to replace it.
>

It hasnt. SMS services is a distributed/decentralized system. It
isnt provided by a single operator. Thats what will happen to
Twitter, it'll be one of many services interconnected through
some standard (whether open or proprietary). Open will win in
the end.

>Skype can also replace phone calls..

So can Google Voice, Apple's iChat, VoipBuster, JahJah and several others. Once again, its a distributed system that is (in
part and eventually wholly) distributed and decentralized.

>Mobile companies will only sell internet access the same way >that Land Telephone companies sell TV nowadays
>

Land phone companies are selling TV channels, voice services and Internet. Mobile companies will follow. They'll still sell services like SMS. With it being decentralized. Actually, phone companies would/will be the major interested in having a decentralized distributed twitter-like system, interconnected through open standars. Thats the only way that they'll defuse twitter's threat.
